Introduction
Since its inception, the Communication Technology Section at Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) has been at the forefront of nurturing skilled professionals in the field of telecommunications. The journey began in 2003 with the launch of the Diploma in Telecommunication Engineering programme, laying a strong foundation for future advancements in communication technology education.
In response to the growing demand for specialised expertise, the section introduced two undergraduate programmes in July 2007- Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Data Communication and Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Mobile Communications. Recognising the need for a more integrated approach, both programmes were merged in 2017 to form the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Telecommunication. Two years later, in 2019, the programme was officially renamed to Bachelor of Telecommunication Engineering Technology with Honours (BTET), following approval by the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE). This strategic evolution reflects our commitment to keeping pace with the fast-moving global telecommunications industry
The BTET programme is thoughtfully designed to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills for professional careers in telecommunications. Covering a broad spectrum, from electrical and electronic fundamentals to signal processing, network systems, and modern technologies like 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), the curriculum ensures graduates are ready to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Notably, over 60% of the programme is dedicated to hands-on laboratory work, ensuring a strong practical foundation.
One of the programme’s key highlights is the Communications Network module, which is aligned with the CISCO Networking Academy (Cisco Netacad) framework. This allows our students to graduate with a Cisco Certified Network Academy (CCNA) Certificate, providing them a solid pathway towards earning the globally recognised CCNA professional certification.
Additionally, UniKL BMI is proud to be a member of the Huawei ICT Academy, giving students the opportunity to pursue Huawei Certified ICT Associate (HCIA) certifications. This partnership allows students to gain essential skills in next-generation ICT technologies, further enhancing their employability and industry readiness in both local and international markets.
Our state-of-the-art laboratories support this robust academic framework. Facilities include dedicated labs for CISCO Networking, Optical Fibre and Networking, Satellite Communications, Wireless Communications, an Anechoic Chamber, and Communication Systems, all of which are closely integrated with the Telecommunication Engineering Technology curriculum.
With a strong emphasis on industry-relevant skills, global certifications, and real-world applications, the Communication Technology Section at UniKL BMI continues to produce graduates who are well-equipped to lead and innovate in the world of telecommunications.
